Particle Storage in MAC-E-Filters

Spectrometer of the Magnetic Adiabatic Collimation type are used to examine the endpoint region of the Tritium beta decay spectrum. Due to the low count rate of the signal a low background count rate is crucial for the sensitivity of the neutrino mass especially for the planned KArlsruhe TRItium Neutrino Experiment (KATRIN). The magnetic and electric field configuration of the used MAC-E-Filter leads to trapping conditions for charged particles which are suspected to be the main reason for background events. Our simulations show that trapping conditions can be destroyed by use of an electric dipol field which is perpendicular to the magnetic field lines. First experimental studies are under way at the Mainz Neutrino Mass Experiment. This work is sponsored by BMBF: FKZ06Mz866I/5.
